One hour outside Agra, on the way to Jaipur, stop to see one of the Mogul Empire’s most inspired creations: Fatehpur Sikri (UNESCO world heritage site). The fort, constructed of red sandstone, is well worth a visit. It was the capital of the Mughal Empire for a few years, from 1572 to 1585. The fort is under continual refurbishment since the red sandstone does not weather well. Admire the details and try to imagine how it was in the sixteenth century. It is not known why the fort was abandoned, but may have been due to a shortage of water.
